Call for SET DESIGNER and MASTER CARPENTER/PAINTER for Fall Production of ELF: THE MUSICAL
We are in need of an independent contractor to work as SET DESIGNER and MASTER CARPENTER/PAINTER for our fall production. Rehearsals are slated to begin the week after Labor Day. The show will be in mid to late November.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Set Designer:
Communicates with the Director, Technical Director, Costume Designer & Lighting Designer to develop a shared understanding of the Director’s artistic vision and concept of the show.
Works in cooperation with the Director & technical Director to create a set design (ground plan, artistic renderings and possibly model) which contributes effectively to the director’s interpretation of the script with all necessary physical elements including such things as furniture placement, entryways, etc, which will allow the action of the script to be accomplished. The set designer will also suggest colors, which will complement the action, mood and setting.
Works in cooperation with the Technical Director to obtain the Lincoln Center Main stage Theater specifications.
Provides all necessary construction drawings to include scaled floor plans, elevations, building sections and details of individual units.
Provides necessary logistics for the movement of scenic elements (traveling on and off stage; flying elements; wing staging.)
Arranges for rental and return of drops or other scenic elements which will not be built.
Master Carpenter/Painter:
Communicates with the Technical Director and Set Designer to develop a strong understanding of the scenic design and physical requirements of the set.
Builds and paints the set by the agreed upon deadlines.
May recruit volunteers or hire a set construction and painting crew using Master Carpenter’s budgeted stipend to complete set construction by agreed upon deadlines.
Purchases necessary materials to build and paint the set. Can request checks from the Producer(s) for materials or be reimbursed. All expenses must be documented with receipts to be submitted to the Producer(s)
Oversees the volunteer crew in building, set-in & strike.
Is trained in all Backstage Warehouse procedures for use of the set building space and materials and opening/closing procedures.
